Employee Stories from Comfort Keepers Home Care Agency in Vero Beach, FL:
One of the most memorable moments that I have had while caring for a client happened on a cool November afternoon out on Orchid Island. For 6 months, I had been caring for a patient with advanced dementia. Though physically she was fine, mentally the disease had taken its toll.
Within the past year, my client’s mental illness had progressed to the point that she could no longer communicate verbally. Her daughter would come to visit her mother but would leave distraught because her presence seemed to upset her mother greatly. Mother would spend the entire visit crying out of frustration from not being able to converse with her daughter. This had taken a toll on the family to the point that they no longer enjoyed coming over to visit, out of fear that they would upset Mother.
Finally, the daughter went out and bought a life size baby doll for her mother praying for a miracle break though. She had spoken to a friend who explained doll therapy and studies showing that its use can alleviate distress and promote comfort in some individuals suffering with dementia.
That evening, the package arrived and immediately upon placing the doll on her mother’s lap, we witnessed a miraculous break through. We sat there in awe for about a minute as Mother cradled her new baby in her arms. She rocked her to sleep and looked up at us revealing the biggest smile I have ever seen on the client. Although she couldn't verbalize her feelings, I couldn't help but feel like I was in the presence of something beautiful.
For months we had been trying to bring Mother into our world- our reality, but we never stopped to think for a second that we should try to enter her reality. She took us to a place where she didn't have to speak to be understood. Just rocking the baby in her arms she was able to communicate Love, contentment, and affection without having to utter a single word.
As a caregiver, we can sometimes get so caught up in the repetitive daily tasks involved in giving our clients' the best care that if we are not careful, we can miss out on moments like this. For me, it is those instants that I live for. They remind me why I am in this field and why I want to continue to dedicate my time and energy for caring for those who need it the most.

An elderly client was assessed in a nursing home after she had surgery for a fractured hip. She was very quiet and depressed, thinking that she would never be able to go home again.
I promised her that when ready she WOULD go home and CK would be there to help her. She did not believe that it would be possible. I think she thought that she would die before she got home as she was in her late 90"s.
Several weeks later she was discharged to home and I went to visit her. She was lying in a hospital bed at home, with a frilly pink bedspread pulled up to her chin. The room was dimly lit and there was no noise in the house. She was pale, not moving and had her eyes closed.
The family told me she was exhausted and did not want to get out of bed or talk to anyone.
I leaned over her and whispered in her ear "Well hello there! Look at you. You ARE home and CK is here to help you!"
Without any warning, this lady sat bolt upright and in a loud and assertive voice said, "WELL, IT'S ABOUT TIME!"
I nearly jumped out of my skin and then broke up laughing.
She still had a tremendous sense of humor and was firm and determined!
She loved the aide that I introduced and within weeks was up and walking again.
If CK had not been involved in her car while she was still in the nursing home, she probably would have not done well, lost her incentive to get better and been discharged to a long term care facility.

Spending time with my client is awesome. He has so many interesting and funny stories from his life being a drummer. I’ve been told he is the life of the party. Great personality! Every time we go to Publix he starts a conversation with somebody…
This past Wednesday he was talking to a lady about music when we were in the check out line. She came from her line to ours. I just looked at the cashier and she said, “I think she is trying to pick him up.” The lady asked if I was his wife, when I said no she almost pushed me over to get closer to my client.
It was cute. My client is always in a great mood and a joy to work with!! I’m glad that when I started with ComfortKeepers that you paired me up with him.
